How to Become an Able Seaman: Requirements and Certificates

  • by

The AB certificate is not handed out on the basis of time served alone. There are specific training requirements, sea service requirements and certificates that have to be in place before the rating is issued.

Here is the pathway broken down clearly.

Starting Point: Basic Safety Training

Before anything else, STCW Basic Safety Training. Four courses: Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid, Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities.

Without these four certificates no flag state will issue a seafarer’s book and no reputable operator will put you on a vessel. Get this done first.

The courses take about a week in total at a maritime training centre. They are not academically demanding but require full physical participation. Pass rates are high for people who pay attention.

Sea Service Requirement

An able seaman certificate under STCW requires a minimum of eighteen months sea service as a rating on deck. Some flag states require less but international recognition of the certificate under STCW requires eighteen months.

This sea service has to be documented. The vessel’s official logbook and the seafarer’s discharge book both record sea time. Gaps, inconsistencies or undocumented service are problems when applying for the AB certificate. Keep records from day one.

The eighteen months does not need to be continuous. It accumulates across vessels and contracts. Most people entering the industry start as ordinary seamen or deck ratings without the AB certificate and accumulate the required sea service over their first two to three years.

STCW Able Seafarer Deck Certificate

The specific STCW certificate is called Able Seafarer Deck, referred to as AB-D in some systems. It requires the eighteen months sea service plus a number of specific training items.

Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats: required for all ABs who could be designated in charge of a survival craft. Practically speaking, all ABs should have this. The course is typically two days.

Security Awareness training: required for all seafarers. Short course, often combined with other STCW training.

Some flag states require additional domestic certificates. The Philippines requires a MARINA-issued STCW certificate. The UK requires an MCA-issued certificate. Each administration has its own process but all should conform to the minimum international STCW standard.

How to Start Without a Certificate

The ordinary seaman or deck hand entry route is the most common. An OS position requires basic safety training and a seafarer’s medical certificate. No AB certificate, no significant prior experience.

Crewing agencies in major seafarer supply countries handle placement for OS positions. The competition for these positions in countries with large maritime workforces is real. Having additional qualifications, helmsman training, able seaman preparatory course, or documented vocational experience relevant to the maritime environment improves the application.

Maritime training institutes in the Philippines, India, Russia, Ukraine, Indonesia and several other countries offer AB preparatory programmes that combine the required STCW training with seamanship education. These programmes are not required but they make the first job search more straightforward and they provide the training foundation that makes the early contracts less overwhelming.

The Medical Certificate

A maritime medical certificate is required before any employment at sea. The ENG1 or equivalent covers vision, hearing, cardiovascular fitness, respiratory function and general physical capacity for the work.

Get the medical before investing heavily in training. Conditions that affect maritime fitness are not common in healthy young people but discovering a disqualifying condition after completing an expensive training programme is a bad outcome with straightforward prevention.

After the First Contract: Building Toward AB

Document everything. Sea service days, vessel types, specific duties performed, cargo handling participation, watch hours. Officers who provide specific statements in discharge books rather than generic ones are giving you usable material for future applications.

The AB certificate application goes to your flag state administration once the sea service requirement is met and the required training is complete. Processing times vary. Apply early. Waiting for a certificate to clear before a contract starts is stressful and avoidable with some planning.
