North Sea offshore AB pay is the highest available at this rank in international shipping. The reasons are specific. The requirements are clear. Here is the full picture.
Why Offshore Pays More
Platform supply vessels and anchor handling tug supply vessels operate in proximity to drilling rigs and production platforms using dynamic positioning. The DP system holds the vessel in position near the installation without anchoring, using GPS, acoustic positioning and thrusters.
This operational environment is more demanding than a sea passage on a bulk carrier. Working on the stern deck of an AHTS vessel during anchor handling in North Sea winter conditions is physically demanding, technically specific work. Operators pay for it accordingly.
The rotation schedule also contributes to the higher rates. Two weeks on, two weeks off means two people are needed to cover one continuous position. That doubles the effective crew cost compared to a conventional five-month deep sea contract. This is built into the monthly rate.
What Offshore ABs Actually Do
On platform supply vessels, deck cargo operations involve working with the vessel’s crane to transfer cargo to offshore installations. The load swings in the swell, the vessel moves under DP, the installation is fixed. Timing and coordination matter in ways that grab discharge on a bulk carrier does not require.
On AHTS vessels, anchor handling on the stern deck is the most physically demanding AB work in offshore shipping. Heavy anchor chain and wire, high-load winch equipment, proximity to a large drilling rig. Physical work requiring situational awareness and specific knowledge of the equipment.
Mooring at offshore installations follows different procedures from port mooring. Buoy approaches, connection to offshore mooring systems, work in swells: these operations are specific to the offshore environment and take time to learn.
The Certificates Required
STCW Basic Safety Training as current. Not expired. All four components.
BOSIET: Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training. Mandatory for offshore work in UK and Norwegian waters. Covers helicopter underwater escape, sea survival, firefighting and first aid in the offshore context. Three to four days. The helicopter escape exercise involves being in a capsule that submerges and inverts. It is not comfortable. It is required. Valid for four years.
Completing the BOSIET before approaching offshore agencies demonstrates that the interest in offshore work is genuine and removes an administrative step from the hiring process.
Pay
Monthly contract rates for North Sea operations on active vessels.
Entry level on smaller PSVs: $2,500 to $3,500 per month. Experienced AB on larger PSVs: $3,500 to $4,500 per month. Senior AB on AHTS or specialist vessels: $4,500 to $5,500 per month with established operators.
